Similarly, we rely on apps to apply the following sort of logic. 1. The user is searching for 電視台. 2. There is no CC-CEDICT entry for 電視台. 3.Try substituting variant characters. 4. 臺 and 台 are variants, so try substituting 臺 for 台. 5. Found a match -- 電視臺 *is* in the dictionary. 6. Display the entry for 電視臺. Even if the user were to search for a non-standard form such as 電视台, an app can use this sort of logic to match it with 電視臺, just as Merriam-Webster was able to match your non-standard spelling "Hong kong" with "Hong Kong". A while ago, I wrote a script to search a corpus. Whether I search for 電視臺 or 電視台 or 電视台, it finds the same results. For example, if I search for 電視台, it will display the following result among many others: 其中尼加拉瓜的電視台，已率先於4月下旬首映播出。 If I search for 電视台, it displays all the same results, including 其中尼加拉瓜的電視台【電视台】，已率先於4月下旬首映播出。 |
