<< review queue entry 72179 - submitted by 'cws' >> not proper noun ---------------------------------------- Editor: 玉 is a free word (not a bound form), so 土耳其玉 can be parsed as two words 土耳其 + 玉. The first word of a two-word lexeme like this can start with a capital letter if, like 土耳其, it is a proper noun. A similar example in English is "Lyme disease". It's not a proper noun, but the first word is written with a capital L because Lyme is a place name. For further discussion of this point, see https://cc-cedict.org/editor/editor.php?log_id=75189&return=ListChanges&handler=ViewLogEntry So I'd write the pinyin for 土耳其玉 as "Tǔ'ěrqí yù". By contrast, 石 is a bound form, which means you can't parse 土耳其石 as two words. |
