<< review queue entry 71202 - submitted by 'hanpingchinese' >> Perhaps 東大寺 should be accompanied with the simplified form seeing as it is not preceded by "from Japanese " and that 奈良 is accompanied by pinyin. Note: I see "from Taiwanese " behaves similarly (i.e. only the traditional characters are given) but there is also an anomaly in one entry (please search meanings for 烏白) --------------------------------------- Editor: > "東大寺 should be accompanied with the simplified form" Yes, it should be treated as a Chinese word in this context. We shouldn't drop Japanese orthography into our definitions gratuitously. It's a different matter if we are providing the original Japanese word from which a Chinese word is derived via orthographic borrowing. In that case, I don't consider it gratuitous. But offhand, I can't think of *other* circumstances where we should introduce Japanese words written in kanji into definitions. In the case of this particular entry, though, the definition should be rewritten more concisely – without the clutter of Japanese or Chinese characters. Overall, it's a sub-par definition: - "extensive" makes it sound like a large building. In fact it covers only about 300 square metres. - "east-most end" is a rather clumsy way of saying "eastern end". - it's gratuitous to mention the Silk Road in an entry for the Shōsō-in - in any case, it's the city of *Nara* that is considered the endpoint of the Silk Road, not the Shōsō-in specifically - "imperial treasures from Tang times" makes it sound like the treasures come from China, but many of the pieces were made in Japan |
