We say "to die of persecution".
Another dict includes the gloss "to die in a frame-up".
I claim that neither a frame-up nor persecution is necessarily involved: it can be *any* sort of unfairness.

In some of the examples below, there is neither a frame-up nor persecution.
The unfairness can take the form of
1. a teenage girl dying in a botched abortion
2. innocent people dying in a tsunami
3. innocent person executed because of the magistrate's incompetence
4. young person sent off to war and dying in a far-off land
-------------------------------------------

Winds of September director Tom Lin remembers how in 2004, when he was just 30 years old, he went to Ye with a script about a middle-school girl who dies during a botched abortion and ends up as a ghost.

But this vacation paradise was devastated by the Asian tsunami of 26 December 2004. The waves killed more than 30,000 people and destroyed 70% of Sri Lanka's coastal villages.

(lit) [If a] county magistrate is undisciplined [i.e., not supervised by his superiors], those who die unjustly [by his sentence may be as many as] half [of the cases he hears].
(fig) The great power of a local magistrate in traditional China had to be carefully monitored and exercised with a great sense of responsibility or there could be disastrous results for those who came for judgment.

4. 被南洋戰爭打亂打散的台灣社會則寫入《孤燈》:青年冤死異域,土地、人民都遭受搜刮掠奪;
In The Lonely Lantern, Lee writes of the havoc and displacements Taiwanese experienced as a result of the war in the South Pacific: young people died in distant locales while Taiwan's land and people were pillaged.

But clan members held Li You-pang's memory in great respect, and were firmly convinced that he had been killed unjustly*. Occasionally the children would hear older relatives express sadness at their father's undeserved fate, but in general their life was quiet and settled.
* Li You-pang was arrested for "membership in a rebel organization" and "subversion," and was executed the next year by shooting.

So-called ghosts are just these souls (hun). Those worshipped and provided for by their descendants become benevolent ghosts. Aggrieved ghosts or those with no one to look after them will be unable to find peace, and will haunt the mundane world.

On more than one occasion they have stressed to the news media that they have decided to devote their remaining years to this battle not merely to obtain compensation but, just as importantly, to fight for justice on behalf of the thousands of fellow victims who did not survive their ordeal.*
* referring to Taiwanese women forced by the Japanese military to work as sex slaves

* "A Taiwanese air force private executed 14 years ago for the rape and murder of a five-year-old girl was innocent after all, a military court has ruled. ... A fresh investigation later found no evidence of Mr Chiang's presence at the scene of the crime and established that he was tortured into making a confession."
