We can't all die. Someone has to live to tell the story, since the murderer's lips are sealed.

We talked about whatever came to mind – our daily routines, our colleges; each a little fragment that led nowhere. We said nothing at all about the past. And mainly, we walked – and walked and walked.
[from Murakami's "Norwegian Wood" – "the past" here refers to the "elephant in the room": the suicide of the girl's boyfriend, who was also the narrator's best friend]

A nurse named Tsai who has worked at Taiwan Adventist Hospital for many years remembers one old lady whose diabetic condition had severely weakened several of her internal organs. Even when she was seriously ill, she would never utter a word about her condition, and her family wouldn't bring it up either.

Mrs. Li has a sad tale to tell. Nearing age 50, she is married to a man with a very successful career at one of Taiwan's top 500 trading companies. When her husband was young and struggling, he always had time to show her affection no matter how tired he was. Now that they are well off, and each home they move into is bigger and ritzier than the last, their separate bedrooms just keep getting farther apart, and they have nothing to talk about except their children. Is her husband tired of her? Has he taken up with somebody? Does he need to see a doctor? Her husband won't discuss the subject, so all she can do is simmer in silence.

This incident demolished the reputation of "energy water" products, and to avoid being affected by negative perceptions Yang avoids using the term "energy" to describe the water he is promoting, calling it instead "good water."

The pharmaceuticals companies have also invented "male menopause." Not to mention that orally administered acne medications can lead to abnormal liver function and that Viagra has no effect on psychogenic impotence. The companies have nothing to say about any of these issues and risks, laments Hsu.

The Tax Reform League, which has long been pushing to change the tax system in Taiwan, believes that the problem is an outgrowth of Taiwan's long-term focus on economic development. In a multiparty democracy, calls to reduce taxes and offer tax breaks come frequently. On the other hand, policies that would result in an increase in taxes, negatively affect economic development, or cause public displeasure rarely if ever get discussed. As a consequence, the tax burden in Taiwan (taxes as a percentage of GDP) stands at only 13.7%, the lowest of all industrialized nations.
