1) "the late" is an adjective, and I don't think 古人 is ever placed before a person's name or title, as in English.

Ex: "The state funeral for the late president was most likely the largest gathering of people in one place ..."

Google:
<<No results found for "古人大总统".>>

I presume "the late" is based on HDC:
指亡故之人
[...] 鲁迅《热风·望勿“纠正”》:“ 汪原放君已经成了古人了。”

But that's "deceased person", not "the late".

-----------------------------

2) /ancient human species such as Homo erectus or Homo neanderthalensis/

See GF and HDC.
Also NA ~ "humans between the apemen and Homo sapiens, living about 200,000-40,000 years ago"
Diff:
- 古人 古人 [gu3 ren2] /people from ancient times/the ancients/the late (i.e. person who has passed away)/
+ 古人 古人 [gu3 ren2] /people of ancient times/the ancients/deceased person/ancient human species such as Homo erectus or Homo neanderthalensis/
