<< review queue entry 68565 - submitted by 'samsara' >> 改掉了傻习惯,不再白花力气,备考便从烦心杂事变成了目标明确的行动. I got rid of the silly habits, no longer wasted effort, and exam preparation has changed from an annoying chore to a targeted action. Editor: 白花 is not a word; 白 has the distinct meaning of "in vain"; it can be constructed freely with a number of verbs, as in 白花, 白费, 白来, 白跑. For a learner it is important to recognize this, and not consider 白花 as a fixed expression. Case in point: 什么时候你感觉研究生白读了? This question has been amply discussed among editors in the past decade, and the consensus, I think, is that CEdict is not an instant translation tool, but a tool for serious students of the language. Some things have to be learnt (in class or thru experience). However, it is also recognized that sometimes having a construct in the dict is practically the only way to explain a specific meaning. Not a black-and-white matter. You could argue that this use of 白 is insufficiently emphasized in CEdict (probably true). You could also propose that expressions like 白来世上走一遭 are sufficiently fixed and idiomatic to be in a dict (maybe) |
