And 芸窗 means "study room" for the same reason. Another dictionary we referenced is Le Grand Ricci, which does not include "books and libraries" as one of its senses, despite being a dictionary that provides a comprehensive list of senses for each Chinese character. It does, however, have a sense that says 芸 refers to "rue (Ruta graveolens L.) (whose leaves were inserted in books to repel insects)". In other words, they balk at saying 芸 means "books" or "libraries", but instead prefer to mention rue's use as an insect repellent in order to explain how words like 芸帙, 芸窗, 芸編, 芸籤 came to have meanings related to books. |
