She finds this situation less than ideal. She says that in order to keep up with the audience's ever-changing tastes, scripts are being rewritten right up to the last minute. Naturally television actors do not have the luxury that movie actors enjoy of allowing themselves time to slowly get in the right frame of mind for a role or scene, but even so, given the fact that TV actors must rely almost exclusively on dialogue and body language to keep the audience's attention, the fact that shooting is so hurried not only waters down the quality of the performance, there is little time even to get the lines right. Such conditions, she feels, make for productions that are really too rough around the edges.

With ecotourism becoming increasingly common in Taiwan, it only makes sense that environmentally friendly, waste-reducing hotels will gradually become ubiquitous. But for now, the fact that environmentalism is being adopted by Taiwan's hotel industry is still "hot news." In contrast to countries in Europe and North America where it has been the order of the day for years and where environmental rating mechanisms are mature, Taiwan still has a long way to go before tourism becomes a "non-smokestack industry."

January 16, 1957, was a seminal day in the world of international physics. Early that morning, the front-page headline of the hot-off-the-press New York Times declared, "Basic Concept in Physics Reported Upset in Tests." The Law of Conservation of Parity-that the natural world, including the subatomic world, has a left-right symmetry like a mirror image-had been disproved at the end of 1956 by scientists at Columbia University and the American National Bureau of Standards. One of the key scientists was an experimental physicist who was a world authority on beta decay research in nuclear physics: Wu Chien-shiung.

Nigensha finally delivered its first completed reproduction in 1981, a work by the famed calligrapher Wang Xizhi. The quality of the reproduction was almost too good for Nigensha's own good! In an interview two years ago with a mainland Chinese news organization, the company's fine arts editor-in-chief Yoshihiko Takajima recounted what happened when they first showed the reproduction to then NPM Director Chiang. After doing a close inspection, the director angrily threw his magnifying glass on the table and spluttered with indignation: "Are you playing me for a fool? I ask to see your reproduction, and you bring me the original straight out of storage!" The outstanding quality of the reproductions made them an instant hit with museum visitors. Art schools, in particular, found them invaluable for classes in which students are required to do copies of old masterpieces. The prices of reproductions back in those days would generally run at least NT$10,000.

At the end of the show Takashi Hamada, secretary-general of Japan’s Interchange Association office in Taipei, asked them for their autographs. John Feng, advisor in international affairs at event sponsor the China Trust Commercial Bank, said happily, “It was worth every cent!” Mixer had just been awarded a Golden Melody Award for Best Band.

We walk a short distance to a small house, in which journals and reference materials of all kinds are scattered about here and there, while off to one side there is a stack of Issue #3 of 952 Vazay Tamo.
