1. I see no evidence in dictionaries that it means "be orphaned".
It's used when one loses a parent, but it doesn't imply the other parent has also died.

2. It's "literary" not "literal"

3. It's one person, not an entire generation.

4. Dicts say it's a tactful/euphemistic expression.
