<< review queue entry 65538 - submitted by 'pepe' >> Found in ABC, PLC ----------------------------------- Editor: This is a bit ho-hum, since it's just a construct ~ "the language (話) of the place one comes from (家鄉)". Depending on context, that language might be referred to as a dialect. Example: 其結果,就是朝夕相處卻形同陌路,台灣媒體把她/他們視為治安隱憂,台灣勞工把她/他們視為搶飯碗者;而她/他們則操著雇主聽不懂的家鄉話,互吐在異鄉討生活的苦水與怨憤。 "The upshot is that in spite of interacting day and night, we are strangers to one another: The Taiwanese media treats migrant workers as a threat to law and order, and Taiwanese laborers see them as a threat to their jobs. Meanwhile, when the migrant workers themselves vent their anger and complaints about trying to make a living in this foreign land, they do so in a language their employers cannot understand." So why draw the user's attention to the entry for 方言? Because a 家乡话 *may* be a dialect? If we included cross-references to synonyms, antonyms, related words, and so on, our entries would become quite cluttered. And this link to 方言 seems to be based on the premise that a 家乡话 is a dialect of the language one speaks oneself, or is a Sinitic topolect. The example above shows that's not necessarily the case. |
