美洲豹 is jaguar (Panthera onca) according to Wp, K and GR.
https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E7%BE%8E%E6%B4%B2%E8%B1%B9

"panther" is a vaguer term, but various dicts say 美洲豹 is "panther".
AHD @ panther:
1. A large wild cat such as a leopard or jaguar, especially in a color form with black fur.
2. See cougar.

ABC defines 美洲豹 as "cougar; puma" (those two words mean the same thing apparently.

I'd say the py should be Měizhōu bào, as K says.
Chao says 豹 is a free word.
Diff:
- 美洲豹 美洲豹 [mei3 zhou1 bao4] /panther/
+ 美洲豹 美洲豹 [Mei3 zhou1 bao4] /jaguar (Panthera onca)/
