"put down" seems wrong.
Probably added to the definition as a guess, without looking for evidence.

put down:
AHD ~ To subject (an animal) to euthanasia.
M-W ~ to do away with (an injured, sick, or aged animal)

(and the meat of a euthanized animal is generally not eaten)

whereas 宰殺 means killing (mostly) uninjured, healthy animals in the prime of life for the purpose of eating their flesh.

Dr.eye: 宰殺.to slaughter; to butcher; to kill (animals for meat)

目前屠宰業仍有五成以上是人工屠宰,往往並未進行事先致昏即活活宰殺。
Yang says that over 50% of pigs in Taiwan are still slaughtered by hand, usually without being stunned first.

每回新船下水得消耗上千斤水芋、宰殺十數頭的豬和小羊,
For each ceremony, people cut over 1,000 taro roots and slaughter some dozen pigs and goats.

李老闆表示,一般鴨子養80多天就出售宰殺,但他卻要求供貨鴨農夏天要養足120天、冬天要130天。
Mr. Li says most ducks are slaughtered at the age of 80-some days, but he has his suppliers wait 120 days in the summer, and 130 in the winter.
Diff:
- 宰殺 宰杀 [zai3 sha1] /to slaughter/to butcher/to put down/
+ 宰殺 宰杀 [zai3 sha1] /to slaughter (an animal for meat)/to butcher/
