I'm not convinced "street market" an accurate translation. In fact, it may not even be a translation of 街市. It could be that it's the other way around, that 街市 is a (bad) translation of English "street market". The example appears on the following website, which appears to have copied the entire ABC Chinese Dictionary in breach of copyright, as well as copying from other sources as well. They give the ABC definition "downtown streets; shopping center" without attribution. (I think "shopping center" is an incorrect definition, though.) https://bkrs.info/slovo.php?ch=%E4%BB%BF%E9%80%A0 In the second example, "street market" is given as the *literal* (character-by-character) translation of 街市, not as its actual meaning. That sentence describes the etymological origin of 街市 in Cantonese. Nowadays, in Cantonese, 街市 means "wet market, market place, i.e. an indoor market where fresh fruits and vegetables, freshly-butchered meat, live fish, poultry, etc. are sold; household goods, daily necessities, etc. may also be for sale in separate sections". [source: ABC Cantonese Dictionary]. Note that it's defined as "an indoor market", so the original "street" sense has been lost. 2) "shopping street" In the other three examples, I would say the meaning is as given here: 商店集中的市區。 https://www.moedict.tw/~%E8%A1%97%E5%B8%82 i.e. it's an urban district in which commerce is concentrated -- a downtown area. It's a 市區: a *district* rather than a street. So it's not "shopping street". Example: 1920年代宜蘭城西門渡口的街市就是一片繁華。 "In the 1920s, the area of Yilan City around West Gate Ford was a thriving commercial district." |
