The white square placeholder is used to represent an unspecified character. Not all words can be written with hanzi characters. With onomatopoeia especially, the spoken word tends to come first, and the invention of a character to represent it comes later. Here are some examples of Chinese words that existed in the mid 20th century, but could not be written with a Chinese character that was generally accepted as correct. Most of them are single-syllable onomatopoeic words (just as "biù" is). http://home.iprimus.com.au/richwarm/nocharacterwords.htm If you know of a character that has become accepted as the standard for any of those words, please let us know :-) In the case of biù, a character has been proposed, but it doesn't exist in Unicode.
