<< review queue entry 66415 - submitted by 'richwarm' >> 1. It's the (absent) consonant, not the absence of a consonant. LA's definition is 語音學上把元音起頭的音節的聲母,稱為零聲母。(literally, the initial of a syllable that doesn't have an initial) LA gives examples: 如「啊(ㄚ ā)」、「鵝(ㄜˊ é)」、「偶(ㄡˇ ǒu)」、「淹(丨ㄢ yān)」、「完(ㄨㄢˊ wán)」、「遠(ㄩㄢˇ yuǎn)」等音節的聲母。 So the initial of 啊 is 零声母. That is, the initial of the syllable "ā" is the zero initial (or the "null initial", if you like). 2. It's not a "syllable having no initial" -- it's the initial of such a syllable. 3. "starting directly with the medial vowel" -- That's wrong too, because a syllable like ān, for example, has a zero initial, but it has no medial vowel (yi, wu or yu) either. |
