I've seen a number of English names, including ghost money, spirit money, funeral money and hell money, but neither seems established enough to use as a definition.

It's believed the spirits of deceased ancestors look after the family and sacrifices of food and "spirit" money are made to keep them happy.

現在台灣中南部一些鄉鎮,特別在中元節用紅紙把冥錢、紙紮包裝起來,燒給「好兄弟」,希望大夥兒收到大紅包後,做個地府財神爺,勿再騷擾人間。
Today, in some rural townships in south and central Taiwan, especially at Ghost Festival, people wrap up the spirit money in red paper and burn it as an offering to the "good brothers" (spirits), hoping that after they get a red envelope and become a local god of wealth, they will no longer tamper with the affairs of men.
