Editor: It's very similar to Japanese "omiyage".

When then-ROC president Chen Shui-bian visited Panama, when Academia Sinica president Lee Yuan-Tseh attended an APEC meeting, and when current ROC president Ma Ying-jeou made a tour of ROC allies in Central and South America, they all came bearing Franz items as gifts.

In the first class, Liu broke the ice by having students share their family nicknames and recall their childhoods in their hometowns. She then had them relate the New Year's customs of their hometowns. "It was only after hearing their descriptions that I learned that Vietnamese put out a big watermelon for the New Year, and that foreign brides often bring sanitary napkins with them as gifts when they go back home on visits."

Taiwan boasts a sumptuous vari- ety of local specialty goods, bringing pride to communities and making superb gifts for tourists. Such sundry items are closely linked to local geography and culture, whether Hsinchu rice noodles caressed by autumn winds, Yilan candied fruits prepared from kumquats that thrive amid cool rains, or traditional crafts such as Yingge ceramics, Meinong paper umbrellas or Sanyi woodcarvings.

After four years of effort, the self-made goods produced by prisons have become more diverse. Current hot sellers include spicy dried tofu developed at Taipei Prison, lacquerware created at Taichung Prison, chocolates painstakingly handcrafted at Taichung Women's Prison, soy sauce fermented according to age-old methods at Pingtung Prison, and handmade noodles made at Kinmen Prison, which are must-buy tourist gifts.

[Li Tinggui's method was passed down to the present day in his native Huizhou, in modern-day She County, Anhui Province, with the result that Hui Ink is still regarded as among the best Chinese inks. The high-quality ink is also engraved with fine landscapes and portraits, comes in a variety of shapes and colors, and is beautifully packaged.]
> Even today, literati in both Taiwan and the mainland cannot go calling on friends without bringing a stick or two of Hui Ink along as a gift.

Wu wanted to bring tourists closer to Taiwan by giving them gift baskets containing samples of foods originally available only to those who traveled to the region in which they were produced.

For middle-aged residents of Fengyuan the store is home to many childhood memories; during festivals local household altars would invariably sport a mung bean cake or pineapple cake, offerings to the ancestors. As well as traditional Taiwanese confections, the store has recently become popular with visitors and locals alike for new products like their salty cakes, the brainchildren of IHWA's owner.

At the end of 2007, during the controversy over the Suao-Hualien highway project, 30 specialty shops formed a "Slow Hualien" alliance and drew up a "Slow Charter" pledging to "earn quality through slowness" and "respect Hualien's natural and historical environment." They exchanged views, assisted one another, and made plans to expand the movement.

Pretty much anyone who's been to Kyoto knows to pick up some Shinzaburo canvas bags as gifts. Lovingly hand-crafted in Kyoto's Higashiyama District, not far from the famed Chion-in Temple, the bags feature attractive colors and a simplicity of design that have made them a runaway favorite with style-conscious young trendsetters.

The upgrade has gone over extremely well with customers, and bookbags from The King just keep getting more and more popular. The firm's fame has even hopped the Taiwan Strait, apparently, for tourists from Hong Kong and mainland China now show up in Kaohsiung with guidebooks in hand, hunting specifically for this "typically Taiwanese" gift item to take back home.

The company's "Marital Bliss" flip-flops, with the characters for "Double Happiness" in white lettering against a red background, have even replaced leather shoes on the list of 12 traditional dowry items among many young people in central and southern Taiwan because of their cuteness and appeal.

But Sanxing Scallions, which have been grown in Yilan's Sanxing Township and continuously improved for nearly 30 years, are turning this image on its head. These outstanding scallions have won market share and become the darlings of the restaurant business, and have recently been turned into Sanxing Scallion Sauce, a line of sauces jointly developed by the Sanxing Farmers' Association and local farmers and targeted at visitors to the area. These sauces have won over tourists and foodies alike, and become a model for how to maintain and add to the value of agricultural products.

The scallion sauces are currently available at tourist spots throughout Yilan County, where they are a much-prized souvenir.

Early this year, Liu Jiarong's "train gift boxes" packaged like an old Alishan train were named by the Association of Taiwan Tour Souvenirs as one of the "Top 100" products with special local character. They have also been popular with consumers, who can't seem to leave town without taking one or more along. In peak season there are long lines of customers, waiting-line numbers in hand, to be called to pick up their fresh-from-the-oven gift boxes, while the employees sweat over their pastry-making "until their hands start to wilt!" says Liu.

After talking to his son about whether he'd be interested in continuing the family business, Qiu Wenzhen raised money to buy a location and build a new 6,000-square-foot factory. He also improved and integrated his toasting and crushing processes, increasing daily production to about 70 kilograms. Then he poured a lifetime of knowledge into a new ginger-sesame oil commemorating the reopening. This new product, which marries the company's old standby with ginger, is a favorite with Taiwanese expats and Japanese tourists.

"Whenever other students asked me what my father did for a living and I told them that he 'makes shen yi [deity outfits],' they would always misunderstand and think he was a shen yi [a doctor of uncanny skill]. That was always good for a laugh, but after the joking ran its course they'd always ask what the heck deity outfits are." Students at school came from all over Taiwan and would always bring back local specialties from home at the beginning of each school year to share with classmates. As a third-year student, Rangting hit on a unique idea-why not make miniature versions of Dad's deity outfits and give them as gifts?
