No, "stop up" means "block an opening or passage by filling it up with something". That's exactly what 堵 means. 2) You're confusing cause and effect. Cause: the roads were filled with slow-moving cars Effect: we were held up 3) 大风来了！倒了树，堵了路 "A strong wind arrived! It knocked over some trees and held up traffic." That's OK as a translation of the whole sentence. But you can't define words by matching up Chinese and English word by word. 堵了路, as a *phrase*, can be translated as "held up traffic", but at the *word* level, 路 doesn't mean "traffic" and 堵 doesn't mean "hold up; delay". |
