1) it's a verb, as most dictionaries indicate (& can also be a noun, of course)
2) it doesn't mean "pass something on" - it means "to have a change" (of dynasty or generation of products)
3) it doesn't mean "new product" - it means "to transition to a new generation of products" and advertising is not necessarily involved (it could be a case of an army upgrading to a new generation of weapons). A new-generation product is a 换代产品, not a 换代.
