I don't think 'chamberlain' is the right thing; probably a wrong understanding of words like 侍候 by the author, and trying to be too clever in the def.
Typically 侍 is a rather noble thing, not attending to a household.

ex:
皇后轝駕侍從甚眾...
陛下在他的侍从簇拥下走向祭坛

M:
1. 隨侍君王左右。
2. 隨從侍奉的人
Diff:
- 侍從 侍从 [shi4 cong2] /chamberlain (in imperial China)/
+ 侍從 侍从 [shi4 cong2] /to serve (an important personage)/attendant/retainer/
