1) "fell into impasse" - only 9 G hits, because that expression isn't idiomatic

2) "impasse" means "a situation in which no progress is possible, especially because of disagreement; a deadlock."

陷入绝境 seems to be something a bit different:

a) 妻兒的生活也頓時陷入絕境。
and the fatherless family suddenly found itself in the direst of straits.

b) 全家頓時陷入絕境,只好投靠到已出嫁的大姊家。
In desperate straits, the family could not but take refuge with Huang's eldest sister, who by then was married.

c)「其實許多自殺者並未陷入絕境,」
[Compared with the severe physical and psychological hardships people like the aforementioned three have suffered, ]
> "most suicide victims really haven't hit dire straits,"

d) When we had our backs to the wall during the war, everyone had to fight together.
战争中我们陷入绝境之时,大家只能合力奋战。

3) Or is 陷入绝境 really just a construct?
