Related words: 百不咋 (bu4 za5): in the sense of 不 followed by 5th tone. So if this is correct (i.e. 4th tone actually used) then yes this strengthens your argument to use (in above entry) bu2 shi5, but I still think an explanation would be useful. 赔不是 (pei2 bu2 shi5): no problems here (consistent with 不是 bu2 shi5) 由不得 (you2 bu4 de5): perhaps this should be bu5 de5? (I've submitted a correction separately) I have to say I find it very confusing as a language-learner. The pinyin is either the theoretical pronunciation (pre-tone sandhi) or the actual pronunciation. So while I understand the reasons for using the pre-tone sandhi (theoretical) pronunciation, what we actually have is more of a mixture, and that's confusing. /rant ----------------------- Editor: I see where you're coming from, but I prefer the current (more concise) definition. The note you suggest adding to the definition says pretty much what the pinyin already says: [bu2 shi5]. |
