大龄青年还能敲开美国留学大门吗?
Can older singletons still knock on the door of studying in the US?

Numerous other examples in google news.
Google translate renders it as "knock on".
------------------------

Editor:
0) Don't trust Google Translate.

1) How do you account for the 2nd character (開)?
You can knock on a door and there may be nobody home, so the door remains shut.
That would presumably not be 敲開.

2) 敲门 means "to knock on a door".
e.g.
- 他刚醒来就听见有人敲门。
- 我敲了一下药店的门,门很快就开了。
So how is 敲开门 different from 敲门.
Surely the character 开 has something to do with it.
敲开门 can't mean just "knock on the door" in the following sentences.
The person clearly gained entrance as a result of "doing 敲开门".
- 敲开门的瞬间,一个未知的酒店世界向你敞开.
- 他敲開門后發現男被告躲藏在內,

3) This example is on jukuu:
微笑能敲开大门,推倒壁垒。
Smiles *open* doors; they don't just *knock* on them.
"A smile can open doors and tear down walls."

4) More examples:
