"(linguistic) motivation" ~
In the context of Sausserean linguistics, the notion of linguistic motivation usually opposes the notion of
arbitrariness that is deemed to characterize linguistic signs. Saussure, however, certainly allowed for
the fact that not all signs are arbitrary by making a distinction between absolute and relative
arbitrariness. Some signs are said to be “motivated”: in the case of onomatopoeia, the “acoustic image”
is motivated by a likeness to some natural sound in the domain of substance.
