this is lacking in most dicts, but Zdic has:

我得到了附近师范学院的一个名额 I got a place at a teachers' training college nearby.

Jukuu:

校领导为我系某老师戴帽儿下达一个教授名额 (no translation. 戴帽儿: as a token of praise)
领导把一个工程师名额戴帽儿下给了小王。The leader named Xiao Wang is also an engineer. (!!)
The translation of this last one is totally wrong.

Editor: Yes, I believe you ;-)
This is the sort of case where Google Translate may provide a sense that is not found in conventional
dictionaries, since GT is based, as I understand it, on translated sentence pairs such as those you
have quoted. For 名额, GT has "places; quota; places for; quotas; places in."

People who work as translators (such as those who wrote the Jukuu translations) don't have the time
to inform dictionaries when their definitions are found to be lacking. Or else they learn the word
through exposure to usage rather than by consulting a dictionary; hence they don't even notice that
the dictionary is lacking.

And it seems that even those who provide the usage example sentences for dictionaries don't talk to
the people who write (or should I say, "compile") the definitions in C-E dictionaries, because often
enough, there are examples of usage that are not indicated in the definitions.

Maybe that's because dictionary compilers separate the processes -- (1) write the definitions (2) get
some examples of usage -- and don't provide a mechanism for interaction.
Diff:
- 名額 名额 [ming2 e2] /fixed number of people/quota/
+ 名額 名额 [ming2 e2] /quota/number of places/place (in an institution, a group etc)/
