caveat: not much time, so maybe not fully researched.

my first impression is that 習氣 refers to a set of habits, a style, rather than a single "unhealthy habit" (like smoking maybe?)
21fisrt says /habit/mannerism/ -- "mannerism" seems to be even further

(rather lengthy and politically oriented
---------------------------------

Editor:

Here is a TP example where 习气 isn't derogatory
Chao considers theater a kind of handicraft rather than a structured, assembly-line affair. Every theater troupe has its own unique style, each is one of a kind. Theater itself serves as a mirror for the joys and sorrows of life, and is a tool for the expression of human emotion.

Other TP examples where the 习气 is a regrettable one:
①eat from a big common pot ②pay or be paid at a fixed rate ③〈PRC〉 work under conditions lacking incentive to be productive

Chien’s subsequent efforts to bring his sales background to bear on the new business upended the literati-driven management model that had previously dominated the publishing industry.

Looking for quick results and stuffing information down the children's throats. . . . That's the way education is done in Taiwan and it is not necessarily related to the difficulty of getting into a school.

Despite numerous painful lessons in the past, the habit of chasing a rising market and cutthroat selling in a falling market has proven difficult to change.

you are simply going to have to change your priorities and abandon impulsive, emotional, or conspicuous consumption if you expect to keep your rendezvous with fortune.

several dicts choose to have 一骨碌, although it's often just the usual construct

I didn't know how to phrase this, so after keeping it on my table for 3 days I submit as is.

Dicts do define
I think it's more useful to have a common construct.

but that doesn't translate into /to show up ON TIME/

出勤率 is 'attendance rate'
出勤情况 is 'attendance record' etc
The opposite of 出勤 is 缺勤
沒出勤 means being absent and not being late

/to be away on business/ is in dicts

at the time I put in /realistic/ I also suggested /practical/. I was groping for a word.
I now think /pragmatic/ is even closer to what I was looking for. That sense was obviously akin to Rich's last.
It covers a whole spectrum, but I don't see that the extreme of that spectrum is only Tw: 现在的女人是真的都很现实 (materialistic or self-interested would fit)

B says "news planning" but (as often) it seems this is a crude translation of the Chinese and not sth in English.

"communication management": sth I thought up while reading on "public relations".
It seems to at least exist:
" Master of Communication Management program ...
You will learn how to design and execute effective communication strategies and tactics across a range of settings, such as supporting a corporation in crisis to regain credibility, or crafting a compelling story for a non-profit organization, ..."

admittedly "public relations" is probably wider than 新闻策划

the def doesn't make much sense, does it?

English dicts are mostly like
"to offer official posts and make lavish promises"
(which probably was an influence here)

GF:
it seems to be about promises, right?
but other dicts are not quite so definitive:

in fact the expression is a bit confusing. If you take 許願 as "promise", /to grant official positions and make promises/ is strangely unbalanced.
Look at L's examples:
1. making promises is not a big sign of gvt corruption, while actually giving benefits would be
2. why would he pledge to not make promises *after he* is elected?

the following examples follow the same pattern:
(he is leaving office, what promises could he make?)

so I chose a non-committal wording ("to offer")
Diff:
- 封官許願 封官许愿 [feng1 guan1 xu3 yuan4] /to confer an official position with lavish promises/to buy support/
+ 封官許願 封官许愿 [feng1 guan1 xu3 yuan4] /to offer official positions and material benefits in order to buy people's allegiance/

I don't think 'chamberlain' is the right thing; probably a wrong understanding of words like 侍候 by the author, and trying to be too clever in the def.
Typically 侍 is a rather noble thing, not attending to a household.

ex:

taking inspiration from dicts

水灵 can be said of
- fruit etc: dicts say it means "fresh and juicy", I don't really believe it but never mind
- of a person, a plant, the skin: here vitality is clearly involved, and I think 'healthy-looking' is close to a general-purpose gloss
- very, very often of eyes, that's why it deserves a gloss, however inadequate

"preface" I think is sth I would say more of the author talking about his book etc., especially for a literary work.

"Words Into Type succinctly characterizes the differences between a preface and intro: "A preface or foreword deals with the genesis, purpose, limitations, and scope of the book and may include acknowledgments of indebtedness; an introduction deals with the subject of the book, supplementing and introducing the text and indicating a point of view to be adopted by the reader. The introduction usually forms a part of the text [and the text numbering system]; the preface does not."
(that's my experience, in the scientific domain at least)

other dicts may not be as affirmative
M
still, 導言 is "introduction'; and M doesn't say 序言 (which has a different def)

2. 绪论 may appear in book titles:
(Introduction to...)

3. here is the content of a book
第一章:绪论(约半周);
绪论 is not before the main matter

4. 緒論 appears a lot in the context of theses, where discussions here and there seem to point to what I'd never call a preface.
--------------------

Editor: That's pretty convincing.
Diff:
