改善不良的風氣和習俗。例 「移風易俗要從教育著手」。
----------------------------------

Editor:
教學層次的問題似還容易解決,對推動母語政策的香港政府來說,最困難的地方還在「如何讓社會大眾去除長久以來的英語情結,」香港政府教育署首席教育主任李國生笑稱,他們作的是「移風易俗」的工作。
However, it would appear that the most difficult challenge facing the Hong Kong government in promoting its mother-tongue instruction policy is not an educational one, but rather that of "how to wean the public away from its long-standing obsession with English," says Lee Kwok-sung, the Education Department's principal education officer for planning and research. He says with a smile that the task before them is one of "changing people's hearts and minds."

這兩個黑金傳聞都還在發展當中,不管結果如何,一場總統大選,充滿了「抹黑」與「黑金」,「政治迫害」與「司法獨立」的互控,台灣的選舉真是令人眼花繚亂,選民究竟該如何撥雲霧以見「青天」,正考驗著眾人的智慧;遺憾的是,政壇人物的不良示範,對整體社會人心的走向都將造成重大影響,不管將來誰作主當家,從政治人物本身開始的「移風易俗」將會是最重要的挑戰。
These two "black gold" cases are still ongoing. Whatever the outcome, the charges of corruption, slander and oppression are making quite a sight out of Taiwan's presidential election. Voters are being sorely tested on their ability to see their way clear through all the fog. Sadly, these charges will have an enormous impact on society. No matter who wins, the biggest challenge will be for the politicians to start cleaning up their act.

台灣光復後,台灣戲曲蓬勃發展,光復前後二十年是採茶戲的全盛時期。可惜好景不常,民國五十年代,電視、電影興起,加上天災頻仍,政府提倡節約、移風易俗,要求統一大拜拜,
After Taiwan reverted to Chinese rule in 1945 Taiwanese opera went through a period of intense development, and tea-picking opera enjoyed a 20-year golden age. But nothing lasts forever, unfortunately. Modern technology – especially television and movies – began stealing audiences away in the 1960s, while a succession of natural disasters prompted the government to push for austerity and ask people to hold fewer temple events.

修法快,移風易俗慢
法律、宗教、倫理道德及風俗習慣等,都是屬於社會規範的一環。傳統習俗之中,有許多歧視女性的例子,例如,認為嫁出的女兒是潑出去的水,無權持分娘家的財產,以及貶抑進入婚姻的女性嫁雞隨雞、嫁狗隨狗等。然而,藉由法規制度的調整,性別平等的進步觀念仍可慢慢成為習俗的一部分,並為多數人所接受。
Laws outpace mores
There are many examples of traditional customs in Taiwan that discriminate against women. For instance, there is the idea that married daughters—described as “water tossed from the cup”—have no right to a share in their parents’ property. Yet with changes to the legal system, conceptions of gender equality can gradually become more accepted and eventually even part of tradition.

We talked about whatever came to mind – our daily routines, our colleges; each a little fragment that led nowhere. We said nothing at all about the past. And mainly, we walked – and walked and walked.
[from Murakami's "Norwegian Wood" – "the past" here refers to the "elephant in the room": the suicide of the girl's boyfriend, who was also the narrator's best friend]

A nurse named Tsai who has worked at Taiwan Adventist Hospital for many years remembers one old lady whose diabetic condition had severely weakened several of her internal organs. Even when she was seriously ill, she would never utter a word about her condition, and her family wouldn't bring it up either.

年近五十,先生是台灣五百大貿易商的李太太就哀怨地說,從前打拚時工作再累,丈夫都會對她刻意溫存,現在華宅越買越大,夫妻倆的臥房反倒越離越遠,除了孩子之外,連可以談的話題都沒有。到底是丈夫厭棄了她?還是在外面有了女人?或者是需要去看醫師?丈夫絕口不提,她也只能憋在心裡。
Mrs. Li has a sad tale to tell. Nearing age 50, she is married to a man with a very successful career at one of Taiwan's top 500 trading companies. When her husband was young and struggling, he always had time to show her affection no matter how tired he was. Now that they are well off, and each home they move into is bigger and ritzier than the last, their separate bedrooms just keep getting farther apart, and they have nothing to talk about except their children. Is her husband tired of her? Has he taken up with somebody? Does he need to see a doctor? Her husband won't discuss the subject, so all she can do is simmer in silence.

This incident demolished the reputation of "energy water" products, and to avoid being affected by negative perceptions Yang avoids using the term "energy" to describe the water he is promoting, calling it instead "good water."

男性更年期也是藥商炒作起來的;青春痘的口服藥會造成肝功能異常、威而鋼無法治療心因性的陽痿……,這些藥商都絕口不提。
The pharmaceuticals companies have also invented "male menopause." Not to mention that orally administered acne medications can lead to abnormal liver function and that Viagra has no effect on psychogenic impotence. The companies have nothing to say about any of these issues and risks, laments Hsu.

據長期關心台灣稅制的公平稅制改革聯盟表示,台灣向來重視經濟發展,政黨政治上普遍只有減稅、提供租稅優惠的呼聲,對於可能影響經濟發展或引發民怨的加稅政策絕口不提,使得台灣的國民平均租稅負擔率(即稅收佔GDP的比率)僅13.7%,是工業化國家中最低的。
The Tax Reform League, which has long been pushing to change the tax system in Taiwan, believes that the problem is an outgrowth of Taiwan's long-term focus on economic development. In a multiparty democracy, calls to reduce taxes and offer tax breaks come frequently. On the other hand, policies that would result in an increase in taxes, negatively affect economic development, or cause public displeasure rarely if ever get discussed. As a consequence, the tax burden in Taiwan (taxes as a percentage of GDP) stands at only 13.7%, the lowest of all industrialized nations.

I don't like that. It's probably in dicts (not checking), but it fails to evoke what the thing is. Moreover it seems elegiac couplet is a distinct thing in Western literature.

"streamer" is inspired from this translation of luoto xiangzi on J:
"at funerals, he would bear a wreath or streamers inscribed with elegiac couplets, following the others through the streets, neither happy nor sad, only to earn a few coppers.
有出殡的,他替人家举着花圈挽联; 他不喜,也不哭,他只为那十几个铜子,陪着人家游街"
though the translation is faulty: it's not "a wreath or streamers", but logically "a wreath with streamers"
----------------------------------

Editor: Yes, I see the problem – not a good definition. It is indeed in ACE and many subsequent dicts.

I think "funeral decoration" is probably better than "funereal decoration" – just as they say "funeral scrolls" rather than "funereal scrolls" in the example below.

沒有輓聯和花籃,
The funeral was conducted in the absence of flowers or traditional funeral scrolls;

祭台兩側的輓聯則寫著「前半生興學,後半生紓難」,「是一代正氣,亦一代完人」。這不是一般應景的溢美之詞,而是當時新加坡僑界對陳嘉庚發自肺腑的讚頌。
while banners either side of the memorial read "He spent the first half of his life promoting education, and the latter helping others," and "Conscience of his generation, paragon of virtue." These were not simply the pretty words one expects from a funeral, but rather the heartfelt feelings of Singapore's Chinese community toward Tan.

This, it seems, is not recognized in dicts.
in TJQ, 掤 [peng2] is universally used, Tw and PRC alike.
It cannot be a miswrite as it's always 掤, in good-quality context too.
TJQ jargon is very specific but usually chars are pronounced with their usual value.

So I'm just baffled.

given the physiognomy of the word, that's what it means.
It was also in the K reference I gave at the time
--------------------------------

Editor: The idiomatic expression is "Close the door behind you!"
But that sounds a bit strange in infinitive form ... "to close the door behind one" ??

Zhidao answers (c is interesting):
带上门 是什么意思
a) 出去的时候顺便把门关上。
b) 顺手关上门啊
对准备出去的人说的
c) 不知道你所说的“带上门”语言环境是什么?“门”有很多种,诸如一般意义的门,带上就是关上;也有一些暗喻为门的,比如拉锁忘拉上(有时遗忘哦),朋友会善意地提醒:带上门或把门关上!......

I checked out the reference you "gave at the time":
"不爱国的趁早滚,永远别回来!!!!,走的时候带上我"
"Those who do not love their country should fuck off as soon as possible, and never come back!!! And take me with you when you go."

1. no effort here.

=21st=
1.a lesson; a moral
2.to lecture someone; to teach (or give, read) someone a lesson (for mistake or wrongdoing)

=Xinhua=
(1)
[lesson;moral]∶指从错误或挫折中得到的经验
水灾的教训
(2)
[education and training]∶教育训练
自无教训。――《玉台新咏·古诗为焦仲卿妻作》
十年生聚,十年教训
(3)
[chide;teach sb. a lesson;teach sb. moral]∶训导;训戒
狠狠地教训了他

=MoE=
教導訓戒。《儒林外史·第三一回》:「近來蒙少爺的教訓,纔曉得書是該念的。」《文明小史·第二二回》:「老夫子教訓得極是,兄弟偏見了。」似教導、教誨、教育、訓誨、訓誡

從失敗或錯誤的經驗中取得的認識。如:「你應牢記這一次的教訓,下次才不會再犯 。」

2. I like a verb sense first, a substantivized use next. I think that's nearly always so.

3. dicts give a mild (more classical?) sense as in Rulin Waishi above. "guidance" is what came to mind.

4. I don't think "moral" is fitting -- "the moral of a story" -- 教训 is the result of sth bad. But I would welcome words beyond "lesson"

5. for the colloquial use, "lecture" is evident but somewhat meh--教训他一顿. However I think "chide" is too mild, can be a short reprimand, and doesn't convey the sense that sb is given an earful in order to teach him a lesson.

6. I think 頓 would apply only to "talking-to"

1. on restaurant's menu
2. Baidu has an article about 帶子, suggests there are two kinds
3. various G-hits and Wp https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E5%B9%B2%E8%B2%9D led me to that def, although I'm not 100% sure.
The one I'm seeing is like a giant mussel, pbly Atrina pectinata (Wp says extinct?)

These two species also have longer names, like 栉江珧 etc

I don't really find fitting E words. Translations usually re-phrase the whole thing.

Examples:
M: 按目前的市價來看,這只手鐲約可折抵現金三萬餘元
GF:以货物折抵欠款
jukuu:
羁押一日折抵刑期一日
定额罚金折抵一日徒刑办法

TP
供旅客兌換折抵飛機哩程數外 [cycling mileage] which can be used to discount flight miles.
還可以孳息折抵每個月的照護費用。 the accrued interest can be used against the monthly costs of care
藉此折抵役期 shorten his mandatory military service
Diff:
# 折抵 折抵 [zhe2 di3] /to compensate for an equivalent amount/to exchange for/
+ 折抵 折抵 [zhe2 di3] /to offset/

LA has this
糾纏;胡混。例 「跟他再攪和下去,只是浪費時間罷了」、「他成天和壞朋友攪和在一塊」
where the def and the ex don't seem quite in sync
Diff:
- 攪和 搅和 [jiao3 huo5] /to mix (up)/to blend/to spoil/
# + 攪和 搅和 [jiao3 huo5] /to mix/to blend/(fig.) to spoil/to mess up things/to run around with (sb)/
+ 攪和 搅和 [jiao3 huo5] /to mix/to blend/(fig.) to spoil/to mess up things/to run around with (sb)/to get involved with/to mix (with other people)/
