TP
第二,華人社會本來一副天高皇帝遠的心態,現在則突然覺得要團結了。
Secondly, people in the Chinese community, who formerly saw politics as something far removed and irrelevant to their lives, now suddenly feel the need to stick together.

然而天高皇帝遠,官印曆書經常無法及時送到偏遠的閩、粵等地,
However, it was often impossible for more distant locales, like Fujian and Guangdong, to receive the official almanac in a timely fashion.

我們這裡是化外之地,標準的天高皇帝遠。
They're totally outside the loop here. You of course know the phrase, 'Heaven is high and the emperor is far away.' Well, it was people like my grandmother who coined it.

雲林海口一帶天高皇帝遠,民主的洗禮還很膚淺。
local politics in the haikou area are linked only tenuously to what goes on in distant Taipei, and the concept of democracy hasn't made much headway here.

It seems to be used mainly when talking of someone's (risky) job and the inevitable accident (or corruption / crime) that results from it.
Is there an English saying for that? The book I've found it it offers "touch pitch and you will be defiled", but that seems to me to miss the point.

“Pika (a Maltese word that roughly means ‘a neighbourly rivalry’) is what drove the Maltese in 1958 to tear down and rebuild the Carmelite Basilica that today defines Valletta's horizon with a 42m-high dome, just to overshadow the Anglican Cathedral next door,” he said.

This is all wrong:
- "rhyming part of a syllable", i.e. the rhyme is "韻", composed of nucleus+coda.
The "rhyme tail" is the "coda" (also meaning "tail").
- "medial" (which isn't a vowel) refers to the part between the consonantal onset and the rhyme, i.e. /j/, /w/, /y/ in Chinese (qia, chua, lüe)

I think "coda" is enough of a definition, but if we add more, it would be something like "part of the syllable that follows the vocalic nucleus".

多用做讽刺和批评一个人无赖,谄媚,小气,为贬义词。
比如: 一个人高价卖给你一件商品,得了巨额利润,但他却说:“我出这个价把它卖给你,我们可亏大了啊……”

(lit) [When a] petty person gets into [a position of] power, [he considers himself] unexcelled in the world.

ABP specifically says "this is *not* equivalent to 'A new broom sweeps clean'". (their emphasis), defining it instead as "someone assuming a new position deliberately makes some changes just to impress people". I imagine the distinction is on "deliberately" and "to impress"

Perhaps we could go with something less idiomatic (but more correct), along the lines of ABP?
