A "surface plate" is a specific category measuring tool, made of a calibrated flat surface. Usually made of granite or cast iron. So in this sense it's distinct from simply "plate" (in English).

花岗石平台是用天然的石质材料制成的精密基准测量工具

Properly this seems to be a collet (like a sort of sleeve that holds a cylindrical tool or item). Normally higher-precision than a chuck as in a drill.

扦插属于无性生殖。扦插繁殖是植物繁殖的方式之一

https://baike.baidu.com/item/%E6%89%A6%E6%8F%92%E7%B9%81%E6%AE%96/8076688

Just 插 can be used as part of 枝插,叶插,根插,茎插 etc.
------------------------

Editor: A cutting is a part of a plant, whereas 扦插 is the *activity* of planting a cutting -- known as cuttage.
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/cuttage

i.e. 扦插 is a verb.

Ex.
林務局東勢林管處也由母株剪下枝葉扦插,

由於大安水蓑衣很容易扦插繁殖,一般學者認為復育難度不高。但2002年以扦插方式大量繁殖時,卻因遺傳同質性高,無法形成有效種子,
“Because Hygrophila pogonocalyx is easy to propagate through cuttings, many scholars believed it should not be difficult to revive its populations. But in 2002, when propagation was tried through cuttings, because the genetic material of the plants was so similar, the process did not yield viable seeds.”

> ”Just 插 can be used as part of 枝插,叶插,根插,茎插 etc.“
But these are verbs too -- they aren't types of cuttings.

For example, 根插 is not a root cutting. It's a verb: to plant roots; to propagate from root cuttings.

I don't think an additional sense is required in the definition of 插. It doesn't mean "cutting", afaics.
Rather, 根插 refers to inserting (插) a root (根) (in the soil).

保種中心蒐藏產自大陸廣西的「黑峰秋海棠」,目前只有5棵。陳俊銘說,雖然可以葉插的方式備份,但生長速度相當緩慢。
“Begonia ferox, a begonia from mainland China’s Guangxi Province collected by the KBCC, currently only has five plants growing in the center. Although they can be propagated from leaf cuttings, they grow very slowly.”

钻床 seems to mean any kind of drilling machine, but when unmodified the "usual" "pillar drill" style drill press seems to usually be meant.

https://baike.baidu.com/item/%E9%92%BB%E5%BA%8A?
http://www.zg-zr.com/product/18/

Also 钻 itself is any kind of hole-drilling thing, not only an auger. The classical auger handtool is more properly a 螺旋钻, and the big earthworking machine has several words like 挖坑机, 钻土机,地钻.

And then add "frame; chassis" to 床, used for machine tools (机床): 车床/旋床, 刨床, 铣床,。。。

We can have an entry for a technical term like this since it would be wrong or at least suboptimal (I presume) to translate it as, say, "wave-shaped extinction".

But it's of limited value, I suppose, since if one is reading Chinese material in which this term appears and one is familiar with the English terms of the domain, then one can probably easily figure out what 波状消光 is from its components.

In the computing sense, there are two main versions - when a piece of code is inserted "inline" in other code, or a graphical element is "inline" with others (like letters in a sentence).

理论上,使用内联函数可以加速程序运行,因为它们消除了与函数调用关联的开销。

https://learn.microsoft.com/zh-cn/cpp/cpp/inline-functions-cpp?view=msvc-170

内联元素又叫行内元素,顾明思义,内联元素(inline element)不占据一整行

https://cloud.tencent.com/developer/article/1996133

For connectors and devices that are inline with a wire or ducting 直列 and 直插式 are used fairly often:

These are all nouns - a via is a place a copper wire passes through a circuit board (i.e. it goes 'via' the hole) and a pad is a place where something (usually) is soldered to a board. Also called a 'land'.

在PCB设计中,我们经常可能遇见这两个专业术语“Via(过孔)”和“Pad(焊盘)”,它们在功能和用途上各有特点,本文将详细解析这两者之间的区别及作用,希望对小伙伴们有所帮助。

拉链袋 sounds like a sliding zipper bag, but it doesn't seem to be a distinction made universally, and it also describes normal bags with actual zippers (e.g. document bags)

Also not sure if Ziploc (the trademark) or ziplock is better?

这就是盛行于几个世纪前欧洲的“私掠(privateer)”制度。

https://baijiahao.baidu.com/s?id=1743833886270529083

Also lots of cases of 私掠船, which would also be "privateer" in English, since it means both the ship and the people on it. But presumably that's covered by 私掠/船?
----------------------------

Editor: It's a verb ("to privateer") and when used as a noun, it's the *activity* (privateering), not a person (a privateer).

While 兆 nominally means "mega-", in the specific context of computer networking, it is also short for megabit per second (in the same way that "meg" can be in English), which is most often just "megabit". However, while "meg" is used more like slang, "百兆/千兆“ seem to be completely normal ways to describe such speeds, even in official marketing material. The formal name for 100Mbps speeds over Ethernet specifically (which this virtually always is) is 100Base-T.

https://baike.baidu.com/item/TP102百兆ETAP/3594765

Likewise "千兆“ is literally just "giga", but in the networking sense means Gbps specifically. Usually just "gigabit" in English as an attributive on "networking" or "Ethernet" (despite that in theory being a unit of data size, not speed, the "per second" getting dropped) or "gig" as slang.

Full name appears to be 普联技术有限公司. While TP-Link appears to be a brand of 普联, it is essentially the same thing in general usage

Especially as their own website is actually at tp-link.com.cn (see the footer), and "Pulian" basically is non-existent in English search results.

They're synonymous in this category: https://list.jd.com/list.html?cat=670,699,700&tid=17961&ev=exbrand_14073

Alternatively, the definition might be /Pulian Technology Co. Ltd. (owner of the TP-Link brand)/ which is perhaps slightly more accurate but a bit clunky?

A comprehensive C-E dictionary of topics (including proper names) can be derived automatically from Wikipedia, and is likely to appear sooner or later. Pleco has indicated that they will offer this sort of name list after Pleco version 4 is released. So it doesn't make sense for us to continue adding names manually, covering what is inevitably only a tiny subset of the names in Wikipedia.

General adjective for systems that are part of some larger device (e.g. the microcontroller in a washing machine).

Most commonly used for "embedded devices", (or "systems") which run "embedded software":

https://baike.baidu.com/item/%E5%B5%8C%E5%85%A5%E5%BC%8F%E8%BD%AF%E4%BB%B6/5345503

But "embedded" can be used an adjective in phrases like "in an embedded context, software requirements are different".

"Embedding" in English seems to have other translations like 包埋 in some biomedical contexts.
--------------------------------

Editor: 包埋 is used in various contexts.

實體化石是因為生物體被琥珀包埋,或被冰雪覆蓋,或陷入瀝青湖中,經碳化作用而形成。

爆炸螺栓是一種爆裂性緊固件。 將螺栓挖空就會充滿爆裂性,並用雷管包埋。

包埋法(Entrapment):酶被包埋在不溶的柱子或者微球內,如海藻酸鈣柱子。

但DTT往往無法還原包埋於蛋白質結構內部。

We are transitioning to version 2 of our syntax.

In v2 entries, pinyin can be segmented and hyphens are allowed. The pinyin for 芳香疗法 is "fāngxiāng liáofǎ". In v1 we could only write [fang1 xiang1 liao2 fa3], i.e. no grouping of syllables into words. In v2, we can write [[fang1xiang1 liao2fa3]]. The double brackets are used to indicate that the entry is v2.

I would say 堡垒机 should be written as a single word rather than two words.
