Yes, seems like a shortened form of 何乐而不为, which is much more commonly used.

Some usage examples:

Direct Translation is to turn the sword Taia

Idiom story(成语故事): https://www.sohu.com/a/348216409_659433

Editor:

1. Don't use / in a definition, it'll be interpreted as the sense separator. You have "(literal) give the handle of the sword/gun to an opponent" which will become "(literal) give the handle of the sword" and "gun to an opponent".

2. When pinyin and the definition are the same, the entries are variants. So use "variant of..." rather than "see..."

3. Usually we just want to define the more common variant and let the less common variant point to the more common one, rather than repeating the definition. One reason is that in the future, if the definition is updated, we only update it once rather than twice (or worse, updating in one place and not the other and now there is drift). Unfortunately many old entries break that rule.

According to Google 倒持泰阿 is the more common one. Interestingly the most common in my corpus is 太阿倒持.

Some usage examples:

褒义词。通常指少女撒娇时,如“给你一粉拳”,因为少女打过来的拳头没有力气 大多会有脂粉气味,所以用来形容女子柔弱可爱;

Editor:

The full phrase is actually: "人比人得死,货比货得扔"[ren2 bi3 ren2 dei3 si3 huo4 bi3 ren4 dei3 reng1]
Not sure if we want to add the full phrase too and the second half as well.

https://zhidao.baidu.com/question/56772097
from the above source,
```
百度百科解释:
货物和货物比,劣质的货物就得扔掉;人和人比,穷困的人就没法活。指人应安于本分,不能盲目攀比。
通俗解释:
人不要互相攀比,每个人都有自己的有点,老和别人比死了算了;东西之间也互相有优点缺点,比较来是没有十全十美的,丢了算了。指人应该学会知足。
```

For the first half of the phrase is pretty much saying: you shouldn't waste time comparing yourself with other people, since people are different and will have different strengths and weaknesses. If you keep comparing, you might as well just die, since it you won't be able to come to a conclusion anytime soon.

Similarly for the second half, if you keep comparing items, you might as well throw one away, since it just takes too much time.

Essentially... comparisons are odious :)

It's also quite similar to the phrase 人比人,气死人

see 走為上|走为上[zou3 wei2 shang4]
--------------------------------------

Editor: "take as a priority" is wrong because
1) It suggests that 為上 relates to *tasks* (the ones that merit one's attention the most), whereas it actually relates to anything that can be rated – for example, birds used for their meat:
「食用綠頭者為上,尾尖者次之」
"the green-headed ones (mallards) are the best to eat; the pointed-tailed ones (pintails) are second best."

2) The grammatical subject of "take as a priority" is a person, whereas the subject of 為上 is the thing that is rated most highly.
The phrase "take as a priority" is more like 以...為上 rather than just 為上.
(person) 以 (thing) 為上 = "(person) values (thing) above all else"
(thing) 為上 = "(thing) is valued above all else."

Examples:
「夫畫道之中,水墨為上」
"Ink painting is the highest form of painting."

都以「體兼眾妙,不露鋒芒」的樸素為上。
Song-dynasty artisans strove after a simplicity based on "incorporating all that is sublime, but not making a flashy show."

並重新喚醒病人為上的醫學價值觀,
