<< review queue entry 89707 - submitted by 'gregboothe' >> Chinese dictionaries define it as 逗留, 停留, 耽搁. I could be wrong, but it seems from a cursory glance through example sentences that this “stay” is narrower than in English, mostly referring to spending the nights at some place away from “home”, for anywhere from days to years. There’s of course also 待/呆在家里 which seems to me almost like a set phrase, and 待会儿 which has multiple meanings, but could “wait a minute” perhaps be considered a type of sandhi? Meaning if 会 hui4 can contextually become hui3 with the same meaning, couldn’t 待 dai4 become dai1? ----------------- Editor: Regarding your comment ~ "Chinese dictionaries define it as 逗留, 停留, 耽搁." Re 停留 (which is actually the Chinese definition of 待 in the XHC entry I quoted), I think that may be part of the source of the confusion here. Some dictionary definitions make 停留 sound rather like "sojourn", but on looking into it, its meaning is broader than that -- it can refer to stopping or staying somewhere for quite a short time, as well as figuratively remaining at a particular stage or level. I've updated the definition of 停留 and included some examples and discussion here: https://cc-cedict.org/editor/editor.php?log_id=97935&return=ListChanges&handler=ViewLogEntry |
