The current definition seems too narrow. 停留 doesn't necessarily imply a stopover or sojourn, and it also has a common figurative sense that isn't covered. TP examples of the physical sense include: 台鐵海風號……會在頭城鎮停留 "The TRA Sea Breeze train ... stops at Toucheng." 不能停留的地方,繞一繞也好。 "At places where [he] couldn't stay, making a circuit would do." 我們在司馬庫斯停留數天…… "We stayed in Smangus for several days ..." The figurative "remain at a stage / level" sense is also common: 「聯盟」一詞雖然時髦,卻始終停留在理念、討論的層次…… 不僅僅是停留在「球迷文化」的階段…… The Contemporary Chinese Dictionary glosses 停留 as "stay for a time; stop; remain", which seems to capture the physical sense well without implying temporary residence or a stopover. I'll adopt that wording. |
