I could be wrong, but it seems from a cursory glance through example sentences that this “stay” is narrower than in English, mostly referring to spending the nights at some place away from “home”, for anywhere from days to years. There’s of course also 待/呆在家里 which seems to me almost like a set phrase, and 待会儿 which has multiple meanings, but could “wait a minute” perhaps be considered a type of sandhi? Meaning if 会 hui4 can contextually become hui3 with the same meaning, couldn’t 待 dai4 become dai1? ----------------------- Editor: I don't think "sojourn; live temporarily" is appropriate. The sense isn't restricted to staying somewhere for an extended period or staying away from home. "The Contemporary Chinese Dictionary" (an edition of 现代汉语词典 giving definitions in both Chinese and English) defines 待[dai1] as "停留 stay", with the example: 待一会儿再走 "Why not stay for a short while?" It also gives 呆[dai1] as an alternative spelling, while 呆 sense 3 refers back to 待[dai1]. Similarly, 新时代汉英大词典 refers 待[dai1] to 呆 sense 3, defined as "to stay; remain", with 待着别动 "to stay put; stand still/fast" as one example, and an example of staying in England for three years as another. So the word can cover anything from staying put briefly to staying somewhere for years. GF likewise refers 待[dai1] to 呆, noting that nowadays this sense is written 呆. Nor is it hard to find actual usage matching these dictionary definitions, particularly when searching for 呆, the spelling now generally used for this sense in simplified Chinese. For example: 好好呆在这里，我马上回来。 (Stay here; I'll be right back.) 你呆在这里就好了。... 我会很快回来的。 (Just stay here. ... I'll be back soon.) These clearly involve staying somewhere only briefly, rather than sojourning or living there temporarily. I think the existing "to stay; to remain" accurately covers this range. |
