<< review queue entry 89393 - submitted by 'hanpingchinese' >> The PRC standard reading is téngwàn. 蔓 has three readings with a clear division of labour: màn for the figurative/literary senses (蔓延, 蔓草), mán only in 蔓菁, and wàn for the concrete sense "slender twining stem" (藤蔓, 瓜蔓, 豆蔓). 现代汉语词典 gives 藤蔓 as téngwàn, and this is not a recent change — the reading was already fixed in the 1985 普通话异读词审音表. téngmàn is very common in speech but is treated as a misreading by the standard. Related: the wàn reading of 蔓 is currently absent from the dictionary entirely. The character entries list only 蔓 [man2] (蔓菁) and 蔓 [man4] (creeper; to spread), and no headword uses wàn. Adding 蔓 [wan4] would also enable 瓜蔓, 豆蔓 and 丝瓜蔓. |
