<< review queue entry 89173 - submitted by 'richwarm' >> 嘅 is indeed a variant of 慨, dicts say, but I think the best way to define 慨 is in terms of two b.f. senses (as do some other dicts[1]): one relating to strongly felt emotion, and another relating to generosity. 嘅 seems to be more narrowly and more concretely "to sigh", so it doesn't exactly match either of these two b.f. senses. 嘅 书证《说文解字·口部》：「 嘅 ，叹也。」 《诗经·王风·中谷有蓷》：「有女仳离， 嘅 其叹矣。」 I don't think we lose much by not noting the variant relationship. Alternatively, we could say /(archaic) to sigh (variant of 慨[kai3])/ if we don't mind that "(archaic) to sigh" isn't explicitly in the def of 慨 I'm proposing. * * * [1] GR, for example, gives just two senses for 慨: 1. S’indigner; se désoler. Colère; tristesse; amertume. 2. Généreux; noble. i.e. - to be indignant; to grieve. Anger; sadness; bitterness. - generous; noble. |
