<< review queue entry 89100 - submitted by 'cws' >> There are 164 compound words that have prefix of 行 I think the quantity of CC-CEDICT entries for compound words containing 行 is comprehensive enough that when a user hovered 行 in a Chinese sentence and 行 does not matched any compound words, it likely means: all right, OK! So I think it's ok to prioritize unbound form meanings over bound form meanings in the case of 行 ----------------------- Editor: There are various reasonable principles for ordering senses, and putting the most common or immediately useful senses first can certainly be one of them. But an entry isn't necessarily just something to scan until the required sense is found; a learner may also read the entry as a whole in order to understand the semantic range of a word and the relationships between its senses. I don't think the fact that compounds beginning with 行 already have entries makes the bound senses less useful in that respect. For example, if a learner hovers over 行人, they'll get "pedestrian; ...", which may be all they need. But they may also view the entry for 行 to see what sense it contributes to 行人. In that case it's useful that the definition starts with "to walk; to go; to travel", rather than "all right; OK!; will do". LA takes a similar approach: it begins its entry for 行 with 行走 and gives 可以 ("行,就這麼辦"; "您說怎麼做都行") considerably later. https://www.moedict.tw/~%E8%A1%8C So I wouldn't reorder the senses on the basis proposed here. |
