Regarding the 瞭解's variant status here: https://cc-cedict.org/editor/editor.php?log_id=97097&return=ListChanges&handler=ViewLogEntry

瞭解 了解 [[liao3jie3]] /variant of 了解[liao3jie3]/

On existing entry of 瞭|了[liao4]: 了 is an unofficial variant of 瞭

However on 97097's update, 瞭解 is the variant of 了解, not the other way around. Or is 瞭解 a variant spelling, and not a variant due to variant character substitution?

If 瞭解 is a variant due to variant character substitution, this should be the new entry for 瞭|了[liao4]:

瞭 了 [liao4] /unofficial variant of 了[liao4]/

If 瞭解 is just a variant merely due to variant spelling, keep the existing entry of 瞭|了[liao4]
-----------------

Editor: This proposal conflates two distinct cases:
瞭 pronounced liǎo, and
瞭 pronounced liào.

The entry you are submitting a change to (i.e. 瞭|了[liao4]) relates to the latter, and does not have any bearing on 瞭解 and 了解, in which the first character is pronounced liǎo.

《通用规范汉字表》 specifically lists 瞭 among characters that are not simplified in certain senses/usages:
对在部分义项和用法上不简化的“瞭、乾、藉、麽”等字,加注予以说明。

Its note on 瞭 says:
瞭:读 liào 时不简化作“了”,如“瞭望”“瞭哨”。
https://zh.wikisource.org/zh-hans/通用规范汉字表#fn_1

Thus there is no inconsistency with 瞭解 being a variant of 了解. In the liǎo reading, as in 了解, 了 is the standard form; when 瞭 is read liào, as in 瞭望, standard simplified-Chinese orthography retains 瞭. The commonly encountered 了望 therefore involves the unofficial use of 了 in place of standard 瞭, not the reverse.

So /unofficial variant of 了[liao4]/ would reverse the relationship.

That said, the existing wording could perhaps be clarified:
瞭 了 [[liao4]] /variant of 瞭[liao4] (了 is commonly but unofficially used as a simplified form in place of 瞭[liao4])/
Diff:
# - 瞭 了 [liao4] /unofficial variant of 瞭[liao4]/
# + 瞭 了 [[liao4]] /unofficial variant of 了[liao4]/
