<< review queue entry 87709 - submitted by 'polaris' >> 堪达罕 kāndáhǎn @ 《现代汉语词典》 〈方〉名驼鹿。[蒙] ---------------- Editor: 1) I removed 'elk', which in North American English normally refers to the wapiti (Cervus canadensis). 堪达罕 denotes Alces alces, which is unambiguously 'moose'. 2) Regarding etymology, HDC says: 源于满语kandahan。 Wiktionary elaborates: Borrowed from Manchu ᡴᠠᠨᡩᠠᡥᠠᠨ (kandahan, “moose”); related to Mongolian ᠬᠠᠨᠳᠠᠭᠠᠢ (qandaɣai) / хандгай (xandgaj, “moose”). This may explain why some sources, including 现代汉语词典, give the source as Mongolian ([蒙]). |
