Editor:
1) I removed 'elk', which in North American English normally refers to the wapiti (Cervus canadensis).
堪达罕 denotes Alces alces, which is unambiguously 'moose'.

2) Regarding etymology, HDC says:
源于满语kandahan。

Wiktionary elaborates:
Borrowed from Manchu ᡴᠠᠨᡩᠠᡥᠠᠨ (kandahan, “moose”); related to Mongolian ᠬᠠᠨᠳᠠᠭᠠᠢ (qandaɣai) / хандгай (xandgaj, “moose”).

This may explain why some sources, including 现代汉语词典, give the source as Mongolian ([蒙]).
