That might have helped to determine whether the proposed sense belongs to 浊 as a standalone word (an adjective), or only as a bound form, as ABC indicates. In this case, the submission points only to a Wiktionary entry, which is useful as a starting point but doesn't by itself show that the proposed sense exists as an independent modern usage. I'm not yet convinced that the character has an independent modern sense "(linguistics) voiced". We certainly have compounds such as 浊音, 浊辅音 and 浊塞音, but I'd like to see evidence that 浊 itself is used in modern Mandarin with that meaning, rather than merely as a constituent of such technical terms. Several modern dictionaries (e.g. LA, PLC, GF and Key) do not give a separate linguistics sense for the character, while HDC's supporting citation is historical. Even if one were to analyze "voiced" as a bound-form sense of 浊, I'm not convinced that adding it would improve the dictionary. I don't think it's really necessary to help explain the compounds. Once a user sees 浊音 defined as "voiced sound" (or 浊辅音 and 浊塞音 similarly), it's not particularly surprising that the ordinary meanings "turbid", "muddy" and "impure" have been extended metaphorically to the phonological domain: a voiced consonant can naturally be viewed as an otherwise identical consonant with the added "impurity" of vocal-cord vibration. In other words, the ordinary senses already make the historical metaphor reasonably transparent, so I'm not sure that adding a separate bound-form gloss along the lines of "(linguistics) (bound form) voiced" would add much value. |
