Examples like the following support the existing glosses: 名利富貴不見得值得追求，中國神仙思想也就出現幽默的傳統，不時裝瘋賣傻戲弄凡人。 ~ "play the fool" 誤信庶子讒言而被刺瞎雙眼的葛勞斯特伯爵、其貪婪的庶子、被追殺而裝瘋賣傻的嫡子， ~ "feign madness" The proposed gloss "to feign ignorance when confronted" seems too specific, since 裝瘋賣傻 is not limited to situations where someone is confronted. Cases where it means "to pretend not to know" are, I think, already covered by "to play the fool." If that nuance needs to be made more explicit, something like "to act dumb" or "to pretend not to know" would be broader and more natural. |
