Editor: I don't think /long ago/ adequately captures the meaning of 久遠.

Several major Chinese dictionaries all define it in terms of duration or temporal extent rather than a point in the distant past:

HDC, M and LA:

Also, "long ago" is primarily an adverbial expression in English (e.g. "Long ago, I learned that you can't judge a book by its title."), whereas 久遠 is an adjective. It seems better suited to expressions such as , rather than to 久遠 on its own.

Usage also points in the direction of duration rather than a distant point in the past. For example:
Here 久远 is contrasted with 暂时, so the meaning is clearly "long-term" or "lasting", not "long ago".

Similarly:
Again, 久远 refers to something whose significance endures over a long period of time.

There's even a discussion in 《百喻经·那先比丘经》 which explicitly says:
So 久远 is not inherently past-oriented; it can also refer to something far removed in the future.

Finally, in the following examples, 久遠 indicates duration ("enduring") rather than remoteness in the past ("long ago"):

Golf has actually had a long history in Taiwan.

The township had a long history of making tea.
Diff:

+ 久遠 久远 [[jiu3yuan3]] /lasting; enduring; extending over a long period of time/
