<< review queue entry 86891 - submitted by 'becky82' >> My 《现代汉语词典》 has - two verb definitions (one is 变得强大 the other is 使强大... ), so it's "to strengthen" and the first one applies to the self, and the second to something else - an adjective definition 强壮粗大 giving the example 手脚壮大. ChatGPT told me this adjective definition, describing phsical sturdiness, is "archaic". Other dictionaries are: - 強盛。 https://dict.concised.moe.edu.tw/dictView.jsp?ID=31090&la=0&powerMode=0 for which CC-CEDICT gives: "rich and powerful" - [bulky;grand]∶庞大;宏伟 and [thick;sturdy]∶粗大;粗壮结实 https://www.zdic.net/hans/%E5%A3%AE%E5%A4%A7 so there is an adjective here that should be covered, I think. Examples: - ……,钓友群体很壮大。 http://m.ce.cn/lv/gd/202311/07/t20231107_38780746.shtml "the fishing community is 壮大"... it seems to mean "sizeable" here - NVIDIA 藉由規模更壯大的Omniverse 平台 https://blogs.nvidia.com.tw/blog/nvidia-brings-millions-more-into-the-metaverse-with-expanded-omniverse-platform/ it's more like "large-scale" here I also feel like "to strengthen" should be first, since the expansion doesn't just imply growing in size, but growing in strength. I'm not sure I completely nailed the gloss here, but we should address the adjective usage at the very least. ----------------- Editor: For the 2nd sense, I think "to grow strong and large" is more apt. Many examples still feel fundamentally developmental and resultative in meaning, e.g. 中共势力已逐渐壮大 社团活动也就愈益壮大 台商阵容更进一步壮大 中国企业已经逐渐壮大 族群日益壮大 |
