<< review queue entry 86727 - submitted by 'encn' >> this term originated long before yuan dynasty and was commonly used in ming and qing dynasties. [9] 。 ---------- Editor: Thank you for correcting my oversight. But, I think the actual situation is somewhere in the middle. "emperor's tutor" - this term has spanned multiple dynasties, as you say, as it could be applied to any teacher of any emperor. "imperial preceptor" - I'm not so sure about this, it seems to be the English translation of an official position or title that only existed during the Yuan dynasty (perhaps it existed in some form during Western Xia but not in the Han dynasty like your first example), and then was abolished during the Ming dynasty For example Wp (for whatever it's worth) says, https://zh.wikipedia.org/zh-cn/帝师 唯独元朝的帝师是专指朝廷官方认证指定的藏传佛教领袖(其中一个职责是向皇帝授戒和灌顶) https://www.epochtimes.com/gb/19/3/17/n11120239.htm 由此,元朝形成独特的帝师制度。 I think this passage makes it clear this was a different title during the Yuan dynasty, as the emperor would appoint a Tibetan Buddhist monk to the role, who was in charge of official Buddhist/Tibetan affairs. Or this long blogpost about the imperial preceptor in the Yuan dynasty https://smglnc.blogspot.com/2011/12/blog-post_1931.html ---------- Since "imperial preceptor" came first in your definition I focused on that one and didn't think too much about "emperor's tutor" Please feel free to submit again if you disagree with anything above - sometimes I feel like people don't correct me enough :) |
