The dictionary 规范词典 defines it as 前贤留下的或长辈生前说过的含教导和告诫意义的话; Google Translate: "Words left by predecessors or spoken by elders during their lifetime, containing teachings and admonitions." Here they use 前贤 to mean "former exemplary people" (like Confucius), and 长辈 is usually parents, grandparents, etc. So I think it's worth splitting into two cases: 1. parents, grandparents, etc. guiding their descendents, and 2. ancient words of wisdom.
