Editor: It seems there may be some confusion between the technical meaning of "barrel of a syringe" and how 针管 / 针筒 are actually used. Including some example usage, as you usually do, would have been helpful in sorting this out.

BARREL
"Identify the parts of a syringe. A syringe is made of 3 basic parts. Those parts include the barrel, the plunger, and the tip. [...] The barrel is the clear part in the middle that holds the medication. The barrel is marked with numbers and lines in a graduated manner. These help to guide you as you fill the syringe. [...] The plunger is the part of the syringe that you manipulate as you fill the syringe. The end of the plunger extends out from the bottom of the syringe, and gently glides inside the barrel. [...] The tip of the syringe is where the needle is attached. For reasons of safety and convenience, safety syringes, or all-in-one syringes, are available with the needle already attached."

In contrast, the following examples show that 针管 / 针筒 denotes a complete syringe, not just the barrel.

"Inject into the body" requires a complete injecting device, not just a barrel.

Refers to a usable applicator; a barrel alone cannot be "used" as a step.

"Draw up and inject" presupposes plunger + needle; a barrel alone cannot do this.

"Safety syringe" implies a needle-safety mechanism; a barrel alone cannot be "safe".

DICTIONARIES
The following bilingual dictionaries include "syringe" for 针管, 针筒, or both: PLC, Grand Ricci, Key, ABC, Wiktionary, and New Century. I did not find "barrel of a syringe" as a gloss in any bilingual dictionary I consulted. MoE's definition of 針筒 likewise describes a complete injection device, explicitly mentioning the plunger and needle:
西醫注射器裝藥液的部分。...筒中有推壓器,前部裝有針頭,用來注射藥液。

Various Chinese dictionaries define 针管 / 针筒 in part-analytic terms (e.g. GF: 注射器上盛液体药剂的管子,用玻璃或塑料制成,上面有刻度), a wording that is repeated in other sources.

However, this sense appears to be very marginal in actual usage. Notably, at least one dictionary that records this "barrel" sense illustrates it with an example that is itself highly contrived:
針管:注射器上盛藥液的管子,用玻璃或塑料製成,上面有刻度。
例:少了~,無法打針。

If one were missing *only* the barrel, this would already presuppose an abnormal, dismantled-device scenario. In natural usage, the example sentence would normally be understood as "without syringes, injections cannot be given", rather than as a reference to a missing syringe barrel.
