There is already a definition for this, but a good translation is "once upon a time". This word is often used at the beginning of a tale, for example:

Cong2qian2 zai4 yi2ge xiao3 cheng2li3, zhu4zhe yi2wei4 lao3 xian1sheng1.
Once upon a time in a small town, there lived an old man.
