Multiple sources say the name refers to the legend that a person bitten by it can only walk five steps before dying. E.g. M ~ 一種毒蛇。頭黑褐色，背灰白色，有菱形花紋，腹白色，有黑斑，尾端側扁。有毒牙，相傳被咬的人走不出五步即毒發而死，故稱為「五步蛇」。 |
