普渡 is nowadays synonymous/an abbreviation of Ghost Festival 中元普渡, but it also refers to the general ritual of making offerings, especially to wandering spirits (rather than gods or ancestors)
- blog discussing this: https://www.alpha2007.com/tarot/index.php?action=brands_detail&br_uid=621
- example 普渡 in Decemeber: https://openmuseum.tw/muse/digi_object/09a10a2b0a6b3ff9835d77a400ff7a6e
- a gov notice mentioning it as an action rather than only "Ghost Festival": "拜神、祭祖、普渡新文化宣導" https://syuejia.tainan.gov.tw/News_Content.aspx?n=6084&s=8615078#

Editor: The "Purdue" sense would go in a separate entry with capitalized pinyin, but we already have 普渡大學, and we are limiting the addition of proper nouns, especially when they are not particularly connected to China.

LA
