Referring to the pills that Wukong turns himself into to get entrance into the cave of the bear demon ------------------------ Editor: Couldn't find 药丹 (藥丹) in a digital copy of 西遊記, but 丹藥 was used a few times. (See the first example below.) 《西遊記》裡，誠心訪道的老孫自我介紹：那山有個老仙長，壽年十萬八千高，老孫拜他為師父，指我長生路一條，「他說身內有丹藥，外邊採取枉徒勞」。 In Journey to the West, the monkey king, an earnest seeker after the Dao, tells us: "In yonder mountains lives an old immortal; his age is 18,000 years. I asked him to be my master, to teach me the way of longevity. He said the elixir of life is within your own body; to seek it elsewhere is a waste of effort." 然而因為合德貪圖享樂，偷偷化了七顆丹藥給成帝吃，結果漢成帝便精洩如泉而亡。 His downfall came when the nymphomaniac Hede secretly ground up seven portions of the miracle drug in the emperor's food and drink. He spurted semen like a spring spurts water-until he died. 一般來說，一個人若擁有權力、財富，則為了延續其滿足的狀態，他會冀求健康、長壽。秦始皇和漢武帝在中國歷史上都是難得一見的，才大志高、功業彪炳的帝王。秦始皇統一度量衡、車同軌、書同文、立郡縣，為中國奠下了可大可久的典章制度。晚年卻為求長生不老，迷信方士，最後竟病死在訪求長生之道的旅途上。漢武帝破匈奴、通西域，開疆拓土，不可一世。但是他生性迷信，終其一生與巫醫術士為伍，最後還是難免一死。即使成就「貞觀之治」的一代英主唐太宗，晚年也因企求長生不老而服食丹藥，因而喪命。 Generally speaking, those with power and wealth will seek health and longevity to perpetuate their sense of satisfaction. The First Qin Emperor unified China, improved transportation, made the language uniform, established prefectures, and established the classic Chinese system that would grow and persevere. The Wu Emperor of the Han dynasty defeated the Huns, opened up Xinjiang, and pioneered new lands. The Taizong Emperor of the Tang dynasty was highly accomplished. All sought longevity: The Qin Emperor became fascinated by alchemy. The Wu Emperor was superstitious all his life and surrounded himself with shamans. Their efforts were in vain.
